Spiders Are One Of The Most Common Pests Homeowners Encounter

There are over 3,000 species in the United States alone. Wherever food is available, these pests are likely to be found.

All spiders are predators, feeding mainly on insects and smaller arthropods. In the United States, only a few species are actually considered poisonous and dangerous to humans. Unfortunately, two of these dangerous species are found in the Lee’s Summit area: the black widow and the brown recluse. When these poisonous spiders are found in the home, we recommend that you call us to get rid of them as soon as possible to ensure the safety of you and your family.

Spiders have two body regions: the cephalothorax (head and thorax) and the abdomen. Spiders do not have antennae, but they do have between six and eight simple eyes. Below spiders’ eyes are two jaws that end in hollow fangs and are connected internally to poison ducts. Spiders have four pairs of legs. Spinnerets, which produce silk, are found on the posterior of the abdomen. In most spider species, the male spider is smaller than the female.

Early instars and many adult males will climb to higher points where there is more air current and spin silk threads into the air while letting the wind carry them like kites to different areas. This ballooning provides a means for spider dispersal.

Because they are predators, they will paralyze or kill their prey with venom. All spiders have venom, but, as mentioned above, only a few are considered poisonous. Spiders typically feed by injecting a pre-digestive fluid into the body of their prey and then sucking out the digested liquid. In general, they can survive several months without food.

Spiders typically don’t bite unless they are provoked by squeezing or handling. Bites tend to occur when males are out looking for a female to mate or when people clean out neglected areas or put on seldom-worn clothing. Most spiders cannot penetrate human skin with their fangs. Those that can usually result in slight swelling and inflammation.

Poisonous Species

Brown Recluse spiders are common in the Lee’s Summit area and can be identified by the violin-shaped marking on their cephalothorax. This marking is darker in color than the rest of its body. Brown Recluse spiders are often found in attics, wall voids, behind toilets, under beds, in closets or rooms, and in areas that are seldom used. Brown Recluse spiders can number in the hundreds or even thousands in homes. They enter homes through cracks and crevices that may not be sealed properly. One of the main food sources for Brown Recluse spiders is silverfish. One way to help control brown recluses in a home is to control silverfish.

Brown Recluse spiders are of major concern because their venom is a cytotoxin and can cause ulcers and open sores where bites occur. When this type of spider is found in the home, it is recommended to find a solution to get rid of them as soon as possible. The brown recluse is the most common type of poisonous spider in our area to get a full list see types of poisonous spiders in Overland Park and Lee’s Summit.
